Phonak is the brand our Sioux Falls patients ask about most, and it is also the brand with the most confusing lineup, because the names change faster than the technology inside them. Two platforms launched in August 2026, which means the Phonak hearing aid features worth understanding are no longer the ones most articles describe. What follows is a plain reading of what each current line does, where the tiers differ in practice, and which line suits which kind of week.

The Four Lines, and Which Phonak Hearing Aid Features Split Them
Phonak organizes by platform, and each platform arrives in several families. Getting the shape right saves a lot of confusion later.
- Audeo EON Sphere. The newest premium receiver-in-canal line, built on a dual chip pair.
- Audeo EON R. The same platform generation on a single chip, in a notably smaller shell.
- Audeo Sphere Infinio. The previous premium line, still fitted and still carrying the longest battery Phonak publishes.
- Virto Infinio. The custom in-the-ear line, built from an impression of your own ear.
- Naida Lumity. The power line, for severe and profound hearing loss.
We fit all of them, and none of them is the right answer for everyone. That is the point of carrying five brands rather than one.
Dual Chips and What the Second One Does
The single most consequential of the current Phonak hearing aid features is the second processor. Audeo EON Sphere runs ERA plus HYPERSONIC as a pair, with Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0 doing the separation of speech from background sound and AutoSense OS AI 8.0 deciding when to apply it.
EON R runs ERA alone. It does not carry Spheric Speech Clarity, and no amount of tier climbing inside the R family adds it, because the chip is not there. That distinction matters more than any marketing sentence about either device, and it is the first thing we explain when a patient arrives having read that EON is one product.
Where EON R puts its effort instead:
- WindBlock 2.0, which handles the turbulence a microphone cannot classify as sound.
- StereoZoom 2.0, narrowing the listening focus onto one talker in front of you.
- RogerDirect, receiving from Roger microphone systems without a separate receiver.
- Tinnitus Balance, a sound generator built into the device.
- A smaller shell, at 25 percent smaller and 20 percent lighter than the previous generation.
Those are real advantages for the right person, and none of them is a substitute for the second chip if restaurants are your whole problem.
How the Tier Numbers Change the Device
Phonak sells each family in performance tiers, and the gap between them is not a volume knob. Among the Phonak hearing aid features that change with tier, these are the ones patients notice.

Read the last row carefully if one of your ears has no usable hearing. CROS pairing lives only on the 90 tier of the R family, which turns a tier choice into a clinical one rather than a budget one.
Battery Life Across the Phonak Lines
Among Phonak hearing aid features, battery is where the newest devices lose. Audeo Sphere Infinio, the previous premium line, publishes up to 56 hours, while both EON families publish up to 38. On the Infinio platform specifically, we have R and Sphere compared.

If a forgotten charging night is a real risk in your house, that 56-hour figure is worth more than a newer platform name. We say that out loud at fittings more often than you might expect.
Custom Devices: The Virto Line
Virto is where the Phonak hearing aid features get packed into a shell nobody can see. It comes in three shells: the rechargeable Virto R Infinio on AutoSense OS 7.0, and the Virto I-Titanium and Virto I-10 NW O on AutoSense OS 6.0 with a disposable battery. The Titanium shell allows a thinner wall, which is often the difference between an invisible fit and a visible one in a narrow canal. We cover the custom in-the-ear line in detail separately.
Phonak publishes four power levels for the family, and your audiogram picks one:
- SP for mild to moderate hearing loss
- UP1 for mild to moderately severe hearing loss
- M for moderate to severe hearing loss, all audiometric configurations
- P for moderate to profound hearing loss, all audiometric configurations
A telecoil is optional rather than standard on the applicable models, and it has to be specified when the device is ordered. Tell us at the fitting if you use loop systems, because this is not something we can add later.
Virto is also the line with the longest trial we offer. Custom devices carry 30 days rather than the standard 10, which gives a shell built for your canal real time to prove itself.
When Hearing Loss Is Severe: The Naida Line
Naida Lumity is the line Phonak builds for hearing loss the receiver-in-canal devices cannot reach. Phonak states the L-UP is for severe to profound hearing loss and the L-SP for mild to severe, and the family carries a telecoil across it, which the newer Audeo devices do not. Naida is Roger compatible, runs SmartSpeech Technology, and the L-PR is the rechargeable option.
That telecoil point is worth sitting with. A patient with severe loss is often the same patient who relies on a loop system at church, and Naida is one of the current lines that still receives one directly.
Connectivity Across the Range
Phonak hearing aid features around connection have converged, with two exceptions worth knowing.
- Pairing. Audeo EON Sphere and Virto R Infinio both pair with up to eight devices and hold two connected at once.
- Calls. Both current Audeo families support hands-free stereo calling through DuoPhone, so the caller hears you through the device microphones.
- Broadcast audio. EON Sphere supports Auracast and LE Audio. EON R is Auracast ready.
- Assistive microphones. RogerDirect sits on EON R and on Naida, which matters at work and in classrooms.
- Telecoil. The Audeo EON devices do not carry one. Naida does, and Virto offers it as an option.
The telecoil line is the one that catches people, and it is the reason we ask about your church and your theater before recommending a platform.
What Shortens the Life of a Phonak Device
Patients ask how long these last, and care decides it more than brand does, so we will not publish a number we cannot source. Here is what ends them.
- Wax, which blocks the sound outlet long before anything electronic gives out.
- Moisture left overnight rather than dried, particularly after a hot day of yard work.
- Hairspray and lotion applied after the devices go in rather than before.
- Heat, usually a dashboard, a windowsill or a bathroom shelf.
- Dropped devices, which survive an IP68 rating and do not always survive a tile floor.
Routine cleaning handles most of it, and we do that as part of maintenance and repair visits rather than waiting for a failure.
