In this Q&A, Dr. Husby shares her journey into audiology and her passion for helping others. She also discusses her strong connection to the Sioux Falls community.
What made you want to become an audiologist?
From a young age, I always knew that I wanted to be in healthcare, I just didn’t know exactly what my calling was. While I was in undergrad, I took a few different classes in the field of communication sciences and disorders and fell in love with the Introduction to Audiology course. Originally, I was hesitant, as I didn’t want to go to school for so many years-but I took the leap, and I am so glad that I did!
What would you say to someone nervous about coming in for a hearing evaluation?
I get it! Hearing loss is something that affects so many parts of our lives and it’s something that can take a long time to accept. There can be a lot of anxiety around coming in to be tested and taking that initial step. I like to start out by talking to my patients to better understand why they are here. Next, I assure my patients that I will speak with them as if they were my family member/s. I walk my patients through the appointment step-by-step and ensure that they feel that they have a good understanding of what we discussed during the appointment before they leave.
Why do you think Stanford Hearing was voted Local Best in the Hearing Aids in Sioux Falls category for 20 years in a row?
I think that our focus on “patient first, always” is what has aided in us being voted The Local Best for 20 years in a row. We believe that by building relationships based on trust and compassion is the most important factor in being successful.
How are you involved in the Sioux Falls Community?
We are involved in numerous local organizations. Our centers participate in the Angel Tree, the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce, and local business fairs/events. We also mentor graduate doctor of audiology students from the University of South Dakota and undergraduate students from Augustana University, and more. We believe that staying connected to our community is a great way to build relationships not only with patients or future patients, but with other business owners in the area.
What’s your favorite thing about Sioux Falls?
I appreciate that Sioux Falls has a small-town feel, but in a bigger city atmosphere. There are a lot of opportunities here not only for small business owners, but women business owners. And I can appreciate having that support.
What are you most excited about in the future of hearing aids?
I am excited to see how hearing aids will continue to evolve in such a complex, technology-driven world.
